Hunting provides the perfect excuse for taking to the hills and getting away from the bustle of modern life. In many ways, the actual taking of an animal is secondary to the pleasure of exploring new country, spending time with good mates, and just enjoying some peace and quiet in a natural setting. However, the thrill of the stalk and the rush of adrenaline that accompanies the 'moment of truth' should not be overlooked! Hunting, for those who partake, is like answering the 'call of the wild'. It is an urge that needs to be answered and in New Zealand there are a multitude of hunting possibilities.

There is no doubt that New Zealand's early settlers have a lot to answer for with the plethora of introduced species that they were responsible for bringing into New Zealand. Mammals made up a large part of them, and deer were a significant proportion. There were times, in the past, when these animals caused a lot of damage to the natural environment, but now as better management plans have been put in place these game animals have become one of New Zealand's leading attractions.

There is a large hunting fraternity within New Zealand and, increasingly, overseas visitors are frequenting these lands to hunt and enjoy the magnificent scenery. To hunt on public lands cost you nothing and the season lasts 12 months! Since 1851, when red deer were released, a variety of game animals have kept hunters on the trail. Other species of deer to be introduced include, fallow deer, sambar, sika, white-tailed and wapiti. Wild pigs can be found throughout the country and there are also a variety of other 'lesser' game animals to be found.

There are good numbers of animals throughout the length and breadth of both islands. New Zealand is famous for the variety and spectacular nature of our topography. This, coupled with freely available game animals, can make for the ultimate hunting adventure. Some of New Zealand's hunting destinations have to be seen to be believed.
