New Zealand has a remarkable variety of underwater locations. From the subtropical far north to the cold water environments of the deep south, the diving is superb, and the diversity is endless. There are hundreds of kilometers of every type of seascape you could imagine. Offshore islands abound on both coasts. There are archipelagoes in both the North and South Island which are surrounded by spectacular scenery. Fiordland, at the bottom of the country, is in a league of its own. It is incredibly beautiful with majestic maintains towering above serene waterways. Marine life is prolific with some of best crayfish and scallop populations in the world. Fish are abundant and, with the introduction of new marine reserves, many species are making a real comeback. With such a rugged and indented coastline New Zealand is well endowed with ship wrecks. Dating from hundreds of years ago to the present day there are some spectacular wrecks available. The cruise liner 'Mikhail Lermotov' is one of the largest diveable wrecks in the world.
